GB Studio

GB Studio is a program that allows you to develop Game Boy video games quickly and easily without prior programming knowledge. You can create your own Game Boy ROM by dragging and dropping elements from one side of the interface to the other. You can even compose the music for your video game directly from the program itself.

Start creating your project in seconds

You do not need to install the GB Studio program to be able to use it. All you have to do is unzip the files in a folder and double-click on the executable. Next, you will have to decide on a name for your new project and select one of the three available templates: Game Boy Color Template, with ready-made examples for platformer and point-and-click games; Game Boy Template, with an example for a top-down perspective game; and Blank Template, where you can start working from scratch, without any point of reference.

Get everything you need to develop your own video game

Once you have chosen the type of project you want to create, you can work on it. You can review all the sections of GB Studio from the drop-down menu in the upper left corner. By default, you will see the Game World tab, which you can use to easily join scenes by simply linking them together. From here, you can also create scripts and variables very easily. Again, you must join lines and arrows to perform these actions. You do not need to enter a single line of code while creating your game. You will find a sprite editor, a background generator, and a music editor in the remaining tabs.

Enjoy a simple tool for your sprites

Although some apps are specially dedicated to this, GB Studio has a tool that allows you to easily edit the animations of any sprite you want to add to your game. You cannot edit the sprites directly, but you can edit how you want them to be animated. When you have finished an animation, you can also test it out to see how it looks directly from this tab. All changes made in the Sprites tab will also be instantly reflected in the Game World tab.

Compose Game Boy music with ease

Another tool integrated into GB Studio allows you to compose chiptune music for Game Boy. Again, here, you will find a series of patterns and templates that can inspire you, but you can create your own musical pieces with them. Like the sprite editor, once you are satisfied with your work, you can insert it directly into the game. Thanks to this, you can create a completely original soundtrack for your next video game creation in just a few minutes.

Download GB Studio and start developing your own video games for Game Boy and Game Boy Color. It has never been easier to do. Once you are happy with your project, all you have to do is export it to a ROM or Web format. If you export it as a ROM, you can play it on an emulator or, if you put it inside a cartridge, on a real console. If, on the other hand, you export it for the Web, you can play your game directly from any web browser.
